Democratic services support the council’s decision-making and governance process, maintaining records of committee papers, managing the constitution and appeals processes. Jobs roles include Democratic Services Officer, Scrutiny Officer, Electoral Assistant and Political Assistant

Education-Professional Advisory

These roles support the work of Barnet Schools and the Children's Service in delivering excellent outcomes for the young people of Barnet. Job roles include Teachers, Learning Network Inspector, Educational Psychologist and Learning Mentors.

Environmental Services

This service includes Environmental Health, Greenspaces, Street Cleansing, Refuse and Waste. Job roles in these areas include Park Keepers, Street Sweepers, Gardeners, Drivers, Cleansing Supervisor and Environment Health Officer.


These departments provide a range of services to the organisation including accounting, payments, insurance, and auditing. Job roles include Accountants at varying levels, Payments Assistant, Income Officer, Finance Manager, Principal Auditor, Insurance Officer and Claims Handler. 


The service covers housing needs, housing provision, private sector housing.  Roles include Temporary Accommodation Officer, Housing Support Officer and Housing Needs Officer.

Human Resources/Payroll/Health and Safety

Human Resources (HR) provide advice to the organisation and our employees on all aspects of employment and employee. HR also provide admininstration of all aspects of the employee life cycle, including recruitment, payroll and pensions.

Job roles include Customer Contact Advisors, Customer Service Administrators, Employee Relations Case Managers, Health and Safety Officers, Pensions Administrators and HR Business Partners.

Information Systems (IT)

IS manage the council's technology infrastructure ensuring the efficient operation of hardware, software and our network. Job titles include Business System Analyst, Systems Support Engineer, Technical Architect and Service Desk Agent.


Responsible for managing legal obligations on behalf of the Council in areas such as community services, property, planning, contracts and litigation. Roles include Solicitors, Lawyers and Legal Assistants.

Midday Supervisors

Supervise and support children in Barnet schools, at lunchtime during their meal and playtime, both inside and outside.


Roles which are one off specialist and do not naturally fit with any stated job category.

Partnership and Commissioning

Work which involves commissioning of services for people with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and other vulnerable groups which need support. Job roles include Commissioning Manager, Programme Manager and Pathways Co-Ordinator.

Planning/Building Control

These roles work in partnership with developers and other agencies to shape development and building within the Borough ensuring compliance with current regulations. Job roles include Building Control Surveyor, Planning Officer and Planning Technician.


This area covers the development and review of Council policies and research. Job roles include Strategic Policy Officer, Business Intelligence Officer and Geographic Data Analyst.


Procurement provide specialist support in establishing, managing and monitoring performance of Council contracts ensuring that value for money is received from Council suppliers. Job roles include Procurement Officer and Procurement Manager.

Project Management

Various roles in departments across the Council delivering one off projects of varying duration.

Property Management/Facilities

Responsible for managing Council property portfolio, assets, managing our buildings and providing service to support our office accomodation.
Job roles include Property Manager, Mailroom Assistant, Asset Management Officer, Valuer and Facilities Support Officer.

Regeneration/Economic Development

This area researchs and informs the Council's understanding of extenral and internal changes impacting upon infrastructure planning within the Borough. Jobs roles include Infrastructure Planning and Growth Area Officer and Regeneration Development Manager.

School Administration

These roles provide administrative support to ensure efficient and smooth organisation of School offices across Barnet.

Social Care - Adults

Roles which identify and support the needs of the local community, providing services for older people by working in partnership with private and voluntary sectors. Job roles include, Social Worker, Support Worker, Occupational Therapist and Assessment and Enablement Officer.

Social Care - Children

These jobs support children and families who experience difficulty in their lives This support covers a number of areas including children in care, provision of residential and foster homes, adoption and supporting young people leaving care. Job roles include: Social worker, Residential Support Worker, Contact Supervisor, Family Support Worker and Outreach Worker.

Teaching Assistant

These roles work within schools, in the classroom assisting and providing support to the teacher in the management and organisation of the pupils. 

Trading Standards

Responsible for promoting consumer confidence within the Borough through investigation of complaints, inspecting premises and enforcing statutes, whilst advising and assisting businesses and consumer customers. Job roles include, Trading Standards Enforcement Officer and Trading Standards Licensing Manager.

Traffic/Highways/Parking/Road Safety

These areas cover all issues relating to traffic, roads and highways, parking provision and road safety within the Borough. Job roles include Civil Enforcement Officer, Highways Inspector, Traffic Enumerator and School Crossing Patrol Officer.


Provides transport for children and adults with special needs as well as supervising contractors providing transport services. Jobs roles include; Coach Escort and Transport Driver

Work Experience Placements

Opportunites for young people still at school to gain valuable work experience for one to three weeks.

Youth and Community

Working with young people on a range of initiatives to enhance and develop their personal skills and social education. Job roles include Youth Worker, Personal Adviser and Sessional Worker.
